If you look at the numbers, there was no way that Ford was going to lose, even if Pantalone had dropped out.
More than enough Pantalone supporters hate Smitherman just as much as Ford and would have stayed home. And a surprising number of them would have gone Ford. In 1990 and then in 1995, what won it for Rae and then Harris was a massive swing of working class voters first to the NDP and then from the NDP to the PCs.

..sigh, well, some of us just had to vote for ethics and integrity. Prostituting my vote just didn't cut it. And I can live with that, and well.

It's not a value judgment. I think you should vote for who you want. The electoral system we have is not ideal.
